Muscles Unit: This is a draft unit intended for Field Test Teachers Only
Why are living things different from one another?
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR FIELD TEST KITS: This unit requires the use of a living organism (planaria) in Lesson 12. If you are receiving your field test kit from BSCS, the kit will include instructions and a code to order your planaria directly from Carolina Biological prior to Lesson 12. It is recommended to order your planaria so that they arrive 3-4 days before you begin Lesson 12. The planaria should NOT eat for one week prior to Lesson 12. If your planaria arrive more than 5 days before beginning Lesson 12, feed them upon arrival and then do not feed them again prior to the lesson. If you are not getting a BSCS field test kit, you can order planaria directly from Carolina or Flinn.
Also included in the BSCS Field Test Kit are the Teacher Documents for Lesson 1 (Cattle, Wasps, Seeds, Flamingos, Apples, and Arm Span), Lesson 2 (Comparing Muscles), Lesson 5 (Family Cards), Lesson 6 (Protein & Chromosome Data), and Lesson 9 (Sibling Cards). These are printed single-sided, in color, and placed into plastic sleeves or ID badge holders (Lesson 1 only). If you are building your own kit, please ensure these documents are printed single-sided and in color for your classroom to use.
On this page, you will find all the materials needed for the Genetics unit.
The materials include: The full teacher edition, all the lab procedures and teacher masters, access to PowerPoints or Google slides for each lesson, access to all interactives and videos, a digital copy of the student edition, and downloadable student handouts for printing and use in student notebooks.
